Dunbar to Belhaven, East Lothian

A short walk along the Dunbar coastal path, the first section of the John Muir Way and an interesting collection of sedimentary and igneous rocks. Trough cross-bedding, possible signs of some of Scotland’s oldest plants, and some remarkable volcanic remains: it’s all here!

THE ROCKS: We’ll traverse the results of several volcanic eruptions from early Carboniferous times, and see different parts of these ancient volcanoes – the lava flows, layers of ash, in-filled vents and intrusions. We will also dig deeper into Dunbar’s geological history, with some of the older sedimentary rocks from the Devonian period, sandstone layers with intriguing features and finish on the impressive varied early Carboniferous sedimentary rocks at Belhaven.

THE WALK: a short walk through the harbour along the promenade, with a couple of diversions onto pebbly and sandy beaches. We will return to the town centre at the end of the walk. I have classified this as an Easy Walk, on paths, although there are uneven surfaces and steps and it may be rough, wet or slippery underfoot. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear and waterproof clothing. Duration 2-3 hours, distance 6 km.

Accessible by public transport, with trains to Dunbar train station (5 minute walk) and buses to the High Street.
