Geology of Edinburgh course: Devonian volcanic activity, Braid and Blackford Hills walk

The rocks of Braid and Blackford Hills were formed during volcanic eruptions around 400 million years ago. This low-level short walk takes us over two of Edinburgh’s Seven Hills, exploring the early volcanic history of Edinburgh.

THE ROCKS: These hills are the remains of silica-rich lava flows and ash layers that represent a very explosive and dramatic episode of volcanic activity 410 million years ago. Blackford Hill is made of andesite, and the Braid Hills are made of an unusual type of igneous rock, trachyte. Both formed during surface volcanic activity. These layers are part of a sequence of igneous rocks that continues into the Pentland Hills.

THE WALK: The walk starts in the Hermitage of Braid, climbs to the summit of Braid Hills, descends again to the Braid Burn in the Hermitage and then over Blackford Hill, circling back to the start point. I have classified this as a Moderate Walk, not always on paths, it may be rough or slippery underfoot at times. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear and waterproof clothing.  Duration 3 hours, distance 9 km.
