Aberfoyle & the Highland Boundary Fault

A circular walk from Aberfoyle in the Trossachs, exploring the Highland Boundary Fault, the rocks on either side of the fault, and how these varied rocks are reflected in the scenery.

THE ROCKS: To the south of the Highland Boundary Fault there are lowland sandstones and conglomerates, part of the Old Red Sandstone. Along the fault itself is an interesting mash of oceanic rocks, sitting alongside the Dalradian metamorphic rocks of the Highlands.

THE WALK: A circular walk from Aberfoyle through the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, on good tracks and paths. From the centre of Aberfoyle the route takes us up through the forest to the Lime Craig quarry and viewpoint. A gentle, undulating descent leads westwards towards the Dukes Pass and then back to the start. Distance 11km with 400m of ascent.

I have classified this as a Moderate Walk; on paths and tracks with some steep ascent. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear, waterproof clothing and something to eat and drink.

This walk is not easily accessible by public transport. Car sharing is encouraged – get in touch if you need a lift or can offer one. There is parking behind the visitor centre.
