Pentlands: Torphin, Torduff and White Hill

A gentle circuit across three low hills in the northern Pentlands, taking in a range of volcanic rock formed 400 million years ago.

THE ROCKS: We will explore a variety of igneous rocks, formed by volcanic activity during the early Devonian period, around 400 million years ago. The rocks include basalt, andesite and trachyte, and they have been affected by a long history of deformation and uplift since they formed. The views to the north, east and west give a good opportunity to appreciate the rocks and landforms of the Midland Valley.

THE WALK: We start near Bonaly, with a climb almost to the summit of Warklaw Hill before descending and passing Torduff Hill, and then walking over White Hill and back to the start point. I have classified this as a Moderate Walk; on paths and tracks with some steep ascent. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear, waterproof clothing and something to eat and drink. Distance 5km with 200m of ascent.
