Hutton’s Coast: Cove and Dunglass

This quiet section of coast has some spectacular sandstone layers that help control the shape of the coastline. It includes the starting point for James Hutton’s journey along the coast in 1788 on the day he discovered Siccar Point.

THE ROCKS: The sedimentary rocks on the coast date from early in the Carboniferous Period, and are typical of the strata formed in this area – thick sandstone layers with intervening mudstone, with a touch of limestone and coal.

THE WALK: a varied walk on paths and beaches that explores different sections of this interesting and quiet coastline. I have classified this as a Moderate Walk; on paths and tracks. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear and waterproof clothing. Distance 7.5km.
