Event Description
A gentle, low-level walk through the heart of the Arthur’s Seat volcano. We’ll take in different parts of the volcano, including lava flows and the inside of the volcanic vent, and explore the story of ancient eruptions and how they shape today’s landscape.
From the meeting point near the Scottish Parliament, we will take a path that gradually climbs below the summit and on to the Queen’s Drive, to circle around past Salisbury Crags and back to the start point. Along the way there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the view, and to find out how the landscape has formed, the human history of the area, and the wildlife that lives there today.
This is classified as an Easy Walk, but the paths are rough in places. Total distance 5km – Route map.
Meet outside the Holyrood Park Information Centre (currently closed), which is a small stone building on Horse Wynd, close to the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace. From the main public entrance to the Parliament, look across the road towards Holyrood Palace, and the information centre is to the right, a small stone building standing by itself on the other side of the ponds and next to the road.
